Introduction

The Sparx Data Converter allows you to generate detailed, student-level QLA (Question Level Analysis) reports based on your Pupil Progress GCSE Maths tracker data (currently AQA, OCR and Edexcel only).

This is ideal for:

  • Identifying gaps in student understanding

  • Aligning assessments with Sparx topics and codes

  • Producing printable reports for students and parents

In this guide, you’ll learn how to:

  • Export the correct data from Pupil Progress

  • Match assessments to exam papers

  • Review question-level Sparx mappings

  • Generate and download student reports

Access the Sparx Data Converter

You can also access the generator by going to the pupilprogress.com homepage -> Hover over Resources -> Export Tools -> Sparx QLA Report Generator

Export your tracker analysis data

Before beginning the QLA generation, you'll need to export the relevant data from your GCSE Maths Pupil Progress tracker.

  1. Open your tracker in Tracker Analysis mode or Open Year Group Tracker Analysis (for a full cohort)

  2. Click: Tools → Download

💡 You can only export per tier (Higher/Foundation), so you’ll need to repeat this process to cover a full year group.

Upload your file

  1. Upload your Pupil Progress export file into the tool

  2. Click Upload & Parse

Detect and select assessments

The tool will automatically detect assessments from your tracker.

  1. Review the detected assessments (grouped by paper)

  2. For each assessment:

    • Select which one you would like to include for that paper

    • Toggle Skip if not needed

  3. Click Match Papers

Match assessments to exam papers

  1. At the top of the page, set your:

    • Exam board

    • Tier (Higher/Foundation)

  2. For each assessment:

    • Use the dropdown to select the correct exam paper

  3. Click Validate

💡 Make sure the correct papers are selected; this is key to accurate reporting.

Validate your selections

On the validation page:

  • Green ticks = everything is correct

  • ⚠️ Orange/Red warnings = mismatches or errors

If you see issues:

  1. Click Back

  2. Correct your paper selections

Once everything looks correct:
3. Click Review Mappings

Review Sparx topic mappings

As Sparx codes do not always match up perfectly with exam-board published papers, each exam question has been mapped to a Sparx topic and code using Pupil Progress’ custom AI model.

You’ll see:

  • A primary Sparx code and topic

  • Sometimes a secondary code/topic

  • A confidence score (High / Medium / Low)

💡 The confidence score reflects how certain the AI is about the mapping.

What to check:

  • Most mappings will be High confidence

  • Review Medium/Low confidence mappings more carefully

You can:

  • Switch between papers using the tabs at the top

  • Edit question mappings using your best judgement

Once you're happy:

  1. Click Generate

Generate and download reports

  1. Enter your school name

  2. Set your RAG rating percentage boundaries

  3. Click:

    • Generate Reports

    • Then Download Student PDFs

Your reports will download directly to your browser, ready to:

  • Print

  • Share with students

  • Use in intervention planning

Each report will contain a QLA breakdown of each individual paper, as well as an overall summary at the end noting the total marks available for each topic, and how that student has performed on the whole.

Data security and privacy

Your data is fully protected throughout this process:

  • All processing happens locally in your browser

  • No data is sent to Pupil Progress servers

  • The tool is fully compliant with our data protection and privacy policies

💡 This means the tool is safe to use with sensitive student PII, such as first and last name.

📖 Team Tip - If you're generating reports for a full year group, export and process Higher and Foundation tiers separately, then combine the outputs for complete coverage.
