Flexi Unit allows schools to add Customised Assessments to a tracker outside of the units defined by the exam board. This is useful when departments want to create synoptic assessments, mock exams or internal tests that assess content from multiple papers.
A School Admin must first enable Flexi Units for a tracker. Once enabled, Subject Leaders can add assessments to the Flexi Unit in the same way they would add assessments to any other unit.
This article covers how to enable Flexi Units, how they work within a tracker and important considerations for grade boundaries.
Enable Flexi Unit
Hover over My School in the top navigation.
Select Flexi Unit.
Choose the Year Group and Tracker(s) where you would like to enable Flexi Units.
Enter a custom name if required. For example:
Synoptic Assessment Unit
Cross-Paper Assessments
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
Click Save.
Once saved, the Flexi Unit will be available for the selected tracker.
π‘ Note: You can give the Flexi Unit a different name for each subject if required, but it will only show on the tracker once an assessment has been added.
Add an Assessment to a Flexi Unit
Once Flexi Unit has been enabled:
Navigate to the relevant tracker.
Add a customised assessment.
Select the Flexi Unit (or its custom name) from the unit dropdown.
Configure the assessment as required.
Save the assessment.
The assessment will function in the same way as assessments added to standard units, including grading and reporting.
How Flexi Unit works
Flexi Units behave like any other unit within a tracker.
Key points:
Assessments can be added and graded in the normal way.
Grades can contribute to tracker analysis and reporting.
Results can pull through to summary areas of the tracker.
Flexi Unit assessments can exist alongside assessments in standard exam board units.
π‘ Note: You do not need to choose between standard units and Flexi Units. A tracker can contain assessments in both.
Understanding Flexi Unit Grade Boundaries
By default, Flexi Unit grade boundaries are automatically generated using a scaled version of the qualification's overall summary boundaries.
This allows grades to be calculated immediately without additional setup.
However, departments may wish to use Custom Grade Boundaries if:
The assessment structure differs significantly from the qualification.
The assessment has a unique mark allocation.
More precise grading is required.
For greater control over assessment grade boundaries, see the related article: Enable Custom Grade Boundaries for a Tracker.
Summary Area Behaviour
Flexi Unit assessments contribute to overall tracker calculations, but they are displayed slightly differently from standard units.
Area | Behaviour |
Summary β Unit Marks | Flexi Units do not appear here |
Summary β Scaled Average Unit Marks | Flexi Unit assessments are included in calculations |
π‘ Note: Although Flexi Units are not shown in the Unit Marks section, their results still contribute to the Scaled Average Unit Marks calculation.
π Team Tip:
Flexi Units are particularly useful for synoptic assessments that combine content from multiple papers. Many schools use them for mock examinations, end-of-year assessments or departmental tests that do not match the exam board's unit structure.
