Mark students as absent for an assessment

Input values in your QLA to mark students' missed assessments.

For times when individual students have missed assessments due to absence, there are some different options for your data entry.

This article breaks down all options for this scenario, and how the tracker responds to each input.

1. Leave columns blank

You can leave mark columns blank and not enter any value for students who were absent for an assessment. Blank columns do not impact students' Summary Grades, and so their grades will not be brought down.

However, if you enter 0 within the QLA, this will be considered as achieving 0 and will impact their overall grade. If 0 is entered for any questions on a QLA, a grade will be generated for the student for the assessment and it will count towards Summary Grades.

πŸ’‘ 0 should only be used when a student has attempted a question but gained no marks.

2. Enter A into columns

Alternatively, if you want a visual indicator that the student was not present for the assessment on trackers and reports, you can enter A into each mark column to indicate absence.

If As are entered for all questions, a grade will not be generated for the student for the assessment and it will not count towards Summary Grades. The tracker responds the same as if columns were left blank.

3. Enter X into columns

Another option for data entry when a student is absent for an assessment is to enter X.

If Xs are entered for all questions, a grade will not be generated for the student for the assessment and it will not count towards Summary Grades. The tracker responds the same as if columns were left blank.

πŸ’‘ Alternatively, you may want to use X to indicate when a student has not attempted a question.
