What is Attainment 8?

Attainment 8 is a whole school performance measure that is calculated based on the grades achieved by students across 8 key subjects, split in to 3 elements (or buckets).

The grade for each subject is converted to an A8 value. The best A8 values in each of the elements is then selected and added together with some additional rules applied:

  • Best English (x2 if Literature & Language sat)

  • Best Maths x2

  • Best 3 EBacc from any of:

    • Science | Computer Science

    • Geography | History

    • Modern Foreign Languages

  • Best 3 Open Subjects

A student's A8 score is compared against the KS2 scaled score to calculate their P8 (i.e. A8 - National A8 avg based on KS2 = P8).

For the DfE's raw figures, please follow this link and go to page 80.

How do Pupil Progress trackers analyse A8?

For Combined Science and Vocational courses, these grades will need to be converted. Conversions are given in the Secondary Accountability Measures published by the DfE.
