How do the trackers work for subjects with tiers?

โš ๏ธ Please note: The video below is currently outdated due to recent updates to the platform, so please refer to the written steps below in the meantime.

Which Tier group should I assign my student to?

  • Tiered Subjects have two versions of the tracker, one for each tier and students will be assigned a tier group once you have enabled tiers on your tracker.

  • But what if you do not know which tier students will eventually take?

You can collect data that will transfer tiers using Customised Assessments added to both tiers.

How do I add a Customised Assessments to both tiers?

  1. Click Add Assessments and select Add Customised Assessment

  2. Choose the unit for each tier you are adding the assessment to

  3. Add the title, max marks or Question Level Analysis

  4. When you see Grade Boundaries, choose Custom Grade Boundaries (click here for more info) and set your raw mark grade boundaries

  5. Choose the classes you want to add this to and click Save Assessment

Something to note:

  • These raw mark boundaries will give a grade for the test based on the raw marks.

  • The raw marks will also be converted to a scaled mark that contributes an equivalent amount to the unit and overall total marks for the tier the student is on

For more information on Custom Grade Boundaries, click here.

  • We would recommend you add Customised Assessments to both tiers when creating them, even if it has questions for just one tier. This creates the same assessment on both tiers which allows for students who switch tiers to take their Customised Assessment data with them.

  • If you also use Custom Grade Boundaries, then the marks will automatically scale to give an equivalent grade when a student switches tier.

Why are my student grades capped?

  • An individual Customised Assessment may have grade boundaries that span grades 1-9 if Custom Grade Boundaries have been used.

  • The tracker will award the student a grade for the Customised Assessment based on those custom grade boundaries.

  • If the student is on Foundation tier, and they get a grade 7 in the Customised Assessment, this will be capped at a unit and course level at a Grade 5. This is because the student cannot achieve a 7 as they are on the Foundation tier.

  • This highlights that they should be considered for moving up to Higher tier.

  • Likewise, if a student is on Higher tier and achieves a grade 2 in a Customised Assessment with Custom Grade Boundaries, they will be marked as a U for the unit and course as they have not met the required lowest grade for the tier and is an indicator they should be moved to a lower tier.

How do I change the tier a student is on?

When you change a students tier, any Customised Assessments set to both tiers will display when a student changes tier.

How are tiered grades analysed?

Analysis spans across both tiers for the subject. However, it only uses the data for a student based on the tier they have been set to.

For example:

If a student had data on Foundation, then switches to Higher, only the Higher data and grades will be used in analysis.

In Grade summary you can see which tier the student is on by looking at the H/ F symbol next to their grade (pictured below)

How are tiered grades Reported?

  • Students will only get one report based on the tier they currently display on the tracker for.

  • It will only contain data and information from the tier they are on; any data hidden on the other tier will be hidden on the report.

  • If you wish to see a report for a different tier that the student has previously been on, switch their tier, then download the report and switch them back.

๐Ÿ“– Pupil Progress Tip

Navigate through to your Assessment List (Tools < Edit Assessments) if you are wanting to double-check which Grade Boundaries are applied to certain assessments.
